The subordinate compound sentence—in this type of sentence, one of the clauses expresses the main idea of the sentence and the other modifies or restricts the meaning of the first

(i) Sentences using 虽然…. 可是 , 但是 , 只是 , 否则 etc

Examples:
  • 爷爷的病虽然好了，但是他还要多休息。
  • 妈妈早就想去香港探望公公，可是一直请不到假。
  • 你快出门吧，否则就赶不上七点钟那班火车。

(ii) Sentences using 因为….所以 , 由于….所以 etc

Examples:
  • 因为天气不好，所以我们取消了到郊外野餐的计划。
  • 由于工作压力太大，所以他的精神越来越不好。

(iii) Sentences using 只要…就 etc

Example:
  • 只要大家分工合作，我们就一定能完成这任务。

(iv) Sentences using 如果….就 , 假如….便 etc

Examples:
  • 如果明天不下雨，我们就去公园。
  • 假如明天你有空，便到我家吃晚饭。

(v) Sentences using 除了….以外….也…. , 除了….以外….都….

Examples:
  • 我在学校除了学习法文和德文以外，也学习意大利文。
  • 除了芒果和西瓜以外，我什么水果都喜欢吃。
